Greatest Invention Of The Century
What’s the greatest invention of the century? If you ask this question to a person, one would get as many answers as the number of respondents. In my case, I would say it to be the personal computer because it has changed the way we lived.
As everybody else, I have my reasons for declaring it. I would christen the invention as “the greatest” which has the most widespread effect on every segment of society & species. Now let’s prove my point:
Effect on every segment of society: The computer has had a considerable & irreversible effect on every segment of society: Employed, unemployed, businessmen, politician, diplomats, pvt. companies, govt deptts, urban, rural, banks, design, civilians, defense, rich, poor etc etc.
Widespread: sales to accounting, thinking to implementing, writing to advertising, US to Africa, Teaching to research, underground to space, science to arts, pin to cryogenic engine design etc etc.
Effect on every species: (directly or indirectly) – It definitely has an impact on every species. In animal research, population count, immune system, DNA mapping etc. the computer has played a tremendous & an commendable role. It has increased our knowledge of the other things around us, which run into millions.
The conclusion of the above is that probably (& in my perception) the computer (or the software called basic which graduated to Windows) is the greatest invention of the century.
Can you imagine a world without “power point” presentations, “word” letters, “access” databases, “excel” analysis, “project” planning, “media player” videos & the likes.
Can you think of the world where manual tickets are issued & when you reach your seat you find that there are 3 other people with the same ticket numbers.
Can you imagine making the neck bending & back killing complex drawing sheets of machine components with just a scale?
Can you imagine making complex tabulated reports & doing its analysis using a calculator?
Can you imagine doing DNA research without a computer?
Can you imagine hand written bills in big retail malls?
Can you imagine hand written air tickets which would be issued at the airport only?
Can you imagine finding a mistake in a bank closing accounts?
Can you imagine rewriting the whole bunch of research papers just because you had made a wrong assumption?
Can you imagine making a board presentation with transparencies?
Can you imagine withdrawing your money through a passbook for which you have to go to the branch of the bank where you had opened the account?
All this & much more could not have been imagined of without a computer. So, thanks to Charles Babbage & Bill Gates, who have made a welcome difference to our lives.
