The Invention of TiVo

TiVo was created in the late nineties by Mike Ramsay and Jim Barton. Ramsay and Barton were originally working on a large-scale interactive television system called “Full-Service Network Project”. TiVo originated from the idea of this project.

Ramsay and Barton realized that they could scale down and make a system that was even more intelligent and at an affordable price. This affordable system would be very similar to the large-scale interactive television system. They named this new invention TiVo.

Ramsay and Barton wanted TiVo to be a user-friendly system. It was their goal to give consumers control over their television programs. The invention of TiVo would give consumers more time and ability of watching their television shows.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January of 1999, TiVo was introduced. Shortly after the show Ramsay set a goal within his company that the first TiVo digital video recorder would be shipped on March 31, 1999. Although all odds were against them, the company achieved this goal and named the first digital video recorder model blue moon.

In September of 1999 TiVo DVRs were being sold in stores. Cable or direct broadcast satellite companies also sold DVRs for a subscription fee. This gave consumers the option of buying DVRs for their life span or “renting” them through their television companies.

A new DVR was launched by Philips Electronics in the later part of 2000. This DVR was the first to be built into a DirecTV receiver. The name of this TiVo DVR is DirecTiVo.

There is a remote called DirecTV TiVo remote. The purpose of a DirecTV TiVo remote is to allow the consumer access to their DirecTiVo. With the DirecTV TiVo remote consumers can pause and replay live programs and play recorded television shows from their DirecTiVo.

TiVo is sold in other countries than just the United States. TiVo was opened up into the UK market in October of 2000. Canada, Mexico, Australia, Taiwan, Brazil, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Netherlands also have TiVo available to them.
